[edit] About

So, who are we and what are we? 'We' are Reading Snowsports, the official snowsports club of Reading University Student's Union. We're here to make sure that everyone at the University of Reading has the opportunity to get involved in snowsports, by which we primarily mean skiing and snowboarding, but we're always looking out for something new!

We like to think that we have something for everyone, from the complete beginner to the habitual seasonnaire. If you've never skied or snowboarded before but fancy giving it a go, why not try our lessons? For the more advanced guys and girls, there's the opportunity to do some race training which will help you to improve your technique and if you fancy it, come and race for us. Click the snowsports link for more info about lessons, race training and racing.

As well as the skiing and snowboarding, we all like a bit of apres, so we get lots of apres ski/'board training in during the year with organised socials and the highlight of the year the SnowBall, watch this space for more...

[edit] Race Training (Ski & Snowboard)

For the Snowsports club, Racing is the daddy! Its a chance to show the other Universities that Reading is just so much better than they are. So if you're intersted in getting in on the banter with either the Ski, Board or Freestyle team then get in touch.

Snowboarding

The Board Team is captained by Rob, and they train on Tuesday evenings at Hemel Hempstead Dry Ski Slope. To race you don't have to have a Volcom sponsorship or be a nut case, but just enjoy going fast on a Snowboard! Racing is also a great way to improve technique and just improve your overall riding. So if you're interested then:

For info Email/Call Rob Direct:

Rob's Amazing Snowboard hotline....: 07966576633 Email: rob@readingsnowsports.co.uk Training meeting: Tuesdays @ 5pm in the Union car par. Cost: £10 (transport and equipment hire included)

Skiing

Ski Racing is run by Paddy. The ski team trains on Tuesday evenings at Hemmel Dry Slope. Paddy and his trusty sidekick Jess are training the team themselves, and Jess reckons she can turn a motley crew into some crazy, mega, super, high speed race team! So if you wanna be part of it all:

For info Call/Email Paddy Direct:

Paddy's Sassy Ski Hotline: 07950753121 Email: paddy@readingsnowsports.co.uk Training meeting: Tuesday @ 5pm in the Union car park Cost: £10 (Transport and Equipment hire included)

The Racing itself

Both the Ski and Board teams race regularly in the Kings Dryslope Series. There are four races in the series, plus the Collegiates held in Sheffield, and the Finals (if we qualify). We race in the London & Southern League with races happening every few weeks. Since Wycombe Summit was burnt down... (don't look at us!) the series is being reformed and rearranged, and we'll know soon whats going on. The racing takes the form of a parallel slalom event, with group stages and a final at the end of the evening. Most of the races are on a Sunday evening (check the Events page), with a couple on Saturdays.

BUDS

BUDS is the British University Dryslopes championships. It is the only BUSA affiliated snowsport event in the UK itself. With over 60 Universities anticipated, you can expect carnage, with serious racing, and serious partying, so dust off your ski boots, snowboards and your glad rags. Did I hear somebody say roadtrip....?!

Please note: BUDS is only avaliable to Racers, Committee & those who express personal direct interest in the event. This interest should be made clear to a Committee member 14 days prior to the event.

The Main Event

This is the big one, the big daddy. The chance for the racers to strut their stuff on snow. This year the event is being held from the 1st to the 8th of April at a location still heavily under wraps, but we know it'll be big. Very big. Ginormous in fact. A week of ski and snowboard racing on snow, together with huge socials, what more could anyone want?! BUSA points are again available, meaning there is a huge turnout, 2600 students last year. You can imagine the mess. With slalom, GS, parallel slalom, team racing, boarder-X and skier-X as well as big air and halfpipe competitions there's loads going on. Put it in your diary. As details emerge, we'll post them here. This event isn't just for racers, so conveniently fits into the scehdule as the Easter Tour, so even if you're not a racer, get involved.

[edit] Our Sponsors

Without our sponsors, we wouldn't exist. It's that simple. They help us both financially and in other ways. Without them, we wouldn't get discounted lessons, cheap holidays, or anything else, basically, there'd be little point in us existing because we wouldn't be able to afford to do anything. Take some time to check out what they all do, some of them will even save you, our members, money directly. Take the time to check them out.

We are always looking for new sponsors. If you feel that your company might benefit from sponsoring reading snowsports, or you know someone who is looking for a sponsorship opportunity, please get in touch with us at snowsports@rdg.ac.uk and we will send you a sponsors information pack.

KPMG

KPMG are our main Club sponsors for Both the Christmas Tour to Val D'isere & the BUSC Main Event Reading Easter Tour. Providing solid backing both financially and professionally for the club KPMG are not only one of the UK's best employers but also the best Sponsors.

"KPMG in the UK is one of the leading firms of business advisors, providing a huge variety of clients with audit, tax and advisory services. We pride ourselves on the depth and breadth of knowledge our talented people can offer, and so are committed to recruiting graduates from a wide range of disciplines. Once you join us, you’ll have the opportunity to excel in a rewarding and challenging environment that encourages everyone to fulfil their true potential."

Wasteland

Our Christmas tour travel company, put simply.. they make it happen...

John Paul Execuitve Recruitment

JPE are one of our main sponsors this year provding Reading Snowsports members with means to find the career right for them following university.

"We believe that if a candidate has the right attitude combined with a passion for an industry and a desire to work for a certain company they stay longer and achieve greater results.

This burning commitment makes them a driving force for the company we place them with. Outperforming their competition and inspiring their colleagues.

Recognising that they are only as good as their weaknesses and always re-setting their goals to increase their output.

It's not about money or fame - it's about success. Success brings money and fame. "

BUSC

The British University Snowsport Council organise all BUSA affiliated snowsports racing in the UK (and abroad). Each year a different Uni bids to run it. It was Newcastle this year and Edniburgh are just about to take over. Check out the website to see what deals you can get from the BUSC sponsors, or enjoy the banter in the forums with like minded people from every uni in the land. Thanks to Jamie, Lou, Pete, Paul and Si for all their help and the great job they did this year and good luck to Iona and her crew for next year, we can't wait.

RUSU

RUSU is Reading University Students Union. Without them, we wouldn't exist. They provide us with disocunted mini-bus hire, give us a budget each year and are there to help us out with so many things we couldn't possibly list them all here. Special thanks have to go to Sam Hibbs, VP Sports and Societies and Adam Bailiey, Student Sports Co-Ordinator, without them, we'd definately fail our degrees. If you see them out, by them a beer, they deserve it. Check out the RUSU website to see what RUSU can do for you and make sure you make the most of your time at Reading. It'll be over before you know it, take it from me!

Natives

Natives is THE Season Worker website. Are you considering doing a season? Check out their website for all the information you could ever need, from the price of a glass of wine in Avoriaz, to the best places to find off-piste in Zermatt, the guys and girls at Natives are fonts of knowledge, and if they don't know the answer, one of the thousands of people in the chat room will!

Nike Ski

John Nike Ski Centre at Bracknell is the home for all of our ski and snowboard lessons. With the new permasnow matting,(none of that nasty dendex diamond matting here), it's a great facility right on our doorstep. From complete beginner, to advanced freestyler, they offer something for everyone with helpful and friendly staff, two great slope and a new freestyle arena on the way, they've got everything we could ever need.

Kings

Kings Ski Club organise the annual dryslope competition series in England. Their events are as much about the banter as the racing, with every event having a fancydress code. If you're a seasoned pro or a novice to raing, you'll all feel at home. Just make sure you singing / shouting voice is in good order!

Summerbreak

Summerbreak is the UK answer to the US springbreak phenomenon. Take a few thousand students. Find a great resort. Add a healthy dose of sunshine*, some alcohol, brilliant nightlife and you're away! Newquay this year promises to be bigger and better than last year (is that possible?!). Make sure you don't miss the boat. Be There. There is no other option.

  • the provision of sunshine is outside the control of both the organisers and the committee, however we will be doing our sun dance in the weeks before the event.
