Season Update

We are proud to announce that after a thrilling season in which both polo teams took the Great British universities competition by storm, the girls are now the reigning BUSA champions while the mens team missed out on goal difference to claim the silver medal. These achievements have seen Cardiff continue to cement our reputation as a first class outfit after nearly a decade at the pinnacle of university water polo.

About Us .

CUSWPC was formed in 2000 from the combination of the old swimming club and the men’s and women’s water polo teams. Since then the club has firmly established itself as one of the largest and most successful clubs in the athletic union. Both men’s and women’s water polo teams have strong records at BUSA finals and the Bristol and West Leagues, and this is likely to continue during the upcoming season. However, after failing to attract sufficient new members the swimming team was relegated last year to BUSA Division 2. This year will see a renewed focus on recruitment and attendance at major competitions in an effort to achieve immediate promotion. In terms of our prospective members, this club can offer both swimming and water polo to players of all abilities, from beginners all the way up to international representatives. The club also has a fantastic social side, ensuring new and existing members mix quickly and have a brilliant time! Please check out our new website at http://www.cuswpc.phpnet.us/

Code of Conduct ..

All club activities and persons must adhere to the following rules at all times.

a) Membership

All those interested in joining the club must register at the AU fair and pay the subscription fee. New members can then collect an AU card and attend all training sessions. Those who join during term time must pay their subscriptions as soon as possible.

b) In the Pool

Swimming and water polo are both physically demanding and potentially dangerous sports unless players consider the following:

 Being able to swim is considered essential.  It is advisable to have a suitable level of fitness – failure to do so puts you at risk.  Players must always abide by the swimming pool rules and conduct him or herself accordingly.  Players must always obey the instructions of the lifeguards. The committee is responsible for ensuring that there is always one present.  Players must conduct themselves in a manner that does not put others (team members or the opposition) at risk of injury.

c) Travelling

 Members must always remember that they are representing Cardiff University and must conduct themselves in a manner befitting this institution.  Members must always regard the use of university minibuses as a privilege and must adhere to the conduct and safety regulations.  Minibuses may only be driven by those members who have successfully completed the minibus test.  Members must conduct themselves in a manner that does not put others (team members or the public) at risk of injury.

d) Socials

 Members must behave sensibly and respect university property and staff when attending socials at the students’ union.  Members must conduct themselves in a manner that does not put others (team members or the public) at risk of injury.  Members must not make fun of other less successful clubs.

Emergency Procedures .

 In the event of an accident there will always be someone present who is trained to deal with the situation: - Lifeguard (NPLQ) - Jack Broadfoot (Immediate Life Support I) - Jaimie Leighfield (St. John’s Ambulance)

 If an accident occurs members are responsible for alerting at least one of the above.

 Members should not attempt to move or tend to an individual unless specifically told to do so by one of the above.

 Committee members are responsible for ensuring that there is always a first aid kit on poolside, whether it be the property of the club or the swimming pool.

Equipment .

The club requires balls and hats for water polo, both of which are expensive and require regular replacement. They are stored at the Welsh Institute of Sport where the teams train.

Complaints Procedure .

Any complaints can be made either to the club president or to a member of staff at the Athletic Union.

Socials .

There are weekly socials every Wednesday night in the Woodville. As our sponsor they provide a designated area plus cheap food and drinks. This always ensures an excellent start to the night before we move on to the union.

Wanderers Mon 19:30 – 21:00, RAF St Athan Wed 19:30 – 21:00, RAF St Athan

Cardiff Ladies Tues 20:30 – 21:30, Newport

There is a small fee (£3) for attending these sessions but they enable members to train with national league senior players which is a fantastic learning experience.

Matches and Competitions .

The swimming team takes part in all three of the BUSA competitions. These are the BUSA short course, BUSA long course and BUSA team championships. They also compete in some local galas. Both the men’s and women’s water polo teams compete in the 1st tier of the BUSA championships and in the Welsh and Bristol & West Leagues. Each player must pay £25 to register for the B & W League. Both sides also organise regular friendly matches against local sides and other universities.

Sport Specific Etiquette .

Unlike swimming, water polo can be a very physical sport. But as the saying goes, what happens in the pool stays in the pool.

Coaching .

Swimming sessions at Maindy are supervised by an ASA qualified coach. We do not employ a coach for water polo as sessions are taken by senior members of the team.

Club Trips .

The club always arranges at least one tour abroad every year; recent destinations have included Malta and Croatia. For any such trips, away matches and BUSA weekend competitions, members must adhere to the code of practice stated above. For any trips requiring a minibus, a member of the committee is required to book 1 month in advance with the student union.
